English 245: Modern Fiction

a collaborative exploration of pervasive tropes, themes, and concepts in contemporary fiction

Chekhov’s gun

Chekhov’s gun is a dramatic principle that every memorable element in a fictional story must be necessary and irreplaceable, and any that are not should be removed. This statement was made by Anton Chekhov 1860-1904, he was a Russian playwrite and short story author.”If in the first act you have hung a pistol on the wall, then in the following one it should be fired. Otherwise don’t put it there”

Flynn uses this to perfection  with Nicks spank bank deposits. First mentioned as what seems to be a brief throw away that Nick had to sign some papers to destroy his deposits, before the paper disapears. Amy uses this to ultimately “win” her battle with Nick by artificial insemination and check mate, Nick loses his only chance to beat Amy and rid himself of her forever. I did not like how the book ended but i must admit Flynn used this concept to perfection. I am sure most people who have read the book did not give this little bit of info a second thought, I know I did not until the end. So what have we learned? Flynn created an awesome be it very disturbed character, and also followed Chekhov’s advice. She fired her literary “gun” right into Amy’s womb creating the device to keep Nick right where he needs to be, next to her for the rest of their lives. Well done and well played 🙂

Chang-Rea Lee interview

Hello class,

Some of you know already, but I sent a letter to Mr Lee to see if he would be willing to answer some questions about On Such A Full Sea. Lee has answered my letter and agreed to 4 questions. If you would like to send me a question to ask him I will go though them and see what are the best 4 or the most asked if there are some that are the same. Hopefuly we can get some awesome answers to a very good book that brought up a ton of questions and discussion during class. I would like to send them no later than Monday afternoon so hurry hurry 🙂

Master of None

While the premise of the story is nothing new. (Single 20 something and his friends in the big city, his daily interactions with said friends and his struggles with dating and work) Master of None is still a very funny show. Aziz Ansari is a very funny comic and he has surrounded himself with a cast of talented and also funny actors. The story lines for the first 5 shows where both hilariously written and while not completely original still refreshing to watch. I think that may be the biggest struggle for this show in future episodes and for most T.V shows in general. How do we come up with new and entertaining content? It may also run true for fiction in any form. After so long is there truely any fresh ideas or is the best we can hope for from the future fiction and script writers is a new look at an old idea. We will have to wait and see when watching the next 5 episodes of Master of None, but so far they are doing a good job.

P.S once again I will state that this site needs Spell check for peeps like me.

Sea is done

Well we will have ALOT to talk about in the morning. The Ending is like the rest of the book, with fan getting what she needs without knowing she needed it. Can’t wait to hear what everyone else thinks about how the story finished.  I was not a fan of the book when we started reading it, but once again Nell has not lead us astray. I truely liked this book

We just got dark

WoW is all I can say about his weeks Full Sea reading. Fan has to save Q and L from becoming dog chow and then get sold into a house where it seems she will be not only the new house keeper but the owners new sex toy. I do not know if Quig knows just what he traded Fan into. It seems Mister Leo likes his girls young and Fan is next on his list. This is of course something that is sadly a fact of life now as well it seems in the future.

Full Sea

I am not a fan of this book so far. The style is just not clicking, But I have faith in Nell she has never lead us astray. Well maybe The Stranger, but we will over look that one. I think the story has potential and Iam hopeing it pick up very soon.  See you all Thursday

I seem to be having an issue with approval for comments on my posts. I tried to hit the approve button but it is not working. Helps ploz

High Art?

We talked about High VS Low art in class on Thursday  so I present the Million dollar Potato Picture. I also ask Is this High art? or a dirty potato and who decides it’s worth? I say the person who paid for it ,but is it him/her or the art expert or critic?

The Semplica Girl Diaries

Is this a story about girls strung up by their heads in hopes of a better life OR about a family that is resentful of what they do not have? I think it could go either way, but lean on the side of the family. Being from a poor family I understand how the parents felt not being able to buy a gift that their child really wants. As hard as it is to say I have to side with Farmer Rich that the money would have been better “sowed” for the future. It is so very hard to not get your children something special for their birthday, and am guilty of this myself. In this strange future were living people are lawn decorations we still seem to have the same old problems, and the division between the haves and have nots now is decided by how many girls hang in the yard.
